Custom CMS development for portfolio and content websites
This page is for artists, studios and companies whose website is their portfolio: the work has to look the way they want, and the content has to be editable without calling a developer for every change. I'm Sergey Vareyko, a software architect with 15+ years in Java, Spring and Vue. Custom CMS development runs through my work from a server-rendered artist portfolio in 2013 to its rebuild on a current stack, and my first community sites go back to before 2010. Below is what I build, how I work and the sites behind it.
What I build
- An admin panel that owns the content. Texts, links, images and settings live in the database and are edited in the admin, so content changes need no redeploy.
- A visual page builder. A GrapesJS editor for freeform layouts, for clients whose design is part of the content.
- Rich text editing. TipTap-based editors with links, alignment and resizable images, and posts that mix images in different layouts, embedded video and custom code.
- A media pipeline. Image and video processing and storage, thumbnails and HLS video playback.
- Dynamic SEO. Search metadata that follows the content as it changes.
- Analytics you own. Built-in analytics, including a privacy-friendly variant with hashed IP addresses, a GeoIP country breakdown, bot filtering and a live visitor counter.
- Languages and themes. Interface language that switches the moment it is selected, any theme, layouts that hold up on most screen sizes.
- Effects that respect weak devices. Interactive visuals with an FPS watchdog that degrades them automatically on slower hardware.
For a shop, the same CMS core carries a catalog — see e-commerce platforms — and for a company with a steady stream of videos and photos, AI automation can turn that material into blog articles.
How I work
A portfolio site starts with the work itself: what is shown, how it is grouped, which pages need their own look, who edits what and how often. From that I define the content model, the admin, the stack and how media is handled. Then a working version with real content, and iterations on top of it. I own it end to end — backend, admin, public site, deployment — and you receive a site you can run yourself: an admin panel for the content, SEO generated from it, and analytics in the same place.
An old site does not have to be patched forever. Bolimond was a one-shot rebuild of a legacy application on Java 21, Spring Boot and Vue 3. A rebuild of an existing site on a current stack is the same job.
Projects in this domain
Bolimond — Author, 2026. A portfolio and CMS for the artist Constantin Bolimond: a public gallery single-page app and an admin panel built around a GrapesJS visual page builder, backed by in-house libraries for media processing and async task orchestration. A one-shot rebuild of a legacy app, with dynamic SEO, analytics and internal AI features.
Vdan — Author, 2026. A portfolio website for a renovation and construction company in Minsk, operating since 2006: apartments, houses, commercial and office spaces, plus client testimonials. A completely dynamic platform with automated UI generation and dynamic SEO, on Spring Boot and MongoDB with a Vue 3 admin using TipTap and ECharts.
Vareyko Family (old). A portal built to share one domain name between several people's portfolios. Kotlin, Spring and React; domains handled by nginx and NS records; instant language switching, any theme, and posts with configurable images, embedded video and custom code.
Bombuilder BY. A one-page gamer profile with a full custom admin panel: platform links (Steam, Discord, Epic Games, GOG and 17 more), bio, PC specs and favorite games, all stored in MongoDB with no redeploys for content changes. Privacy-friendly analytics, an interactive canvas and an FPS watchdog for weak devices.
Bolimond Portfolio (old) — Software Engineer, 2013. The earlier portfolio of the same artist: a gallery and customizable pages rendered by JSP on the server, with AJAX calls receiving ready HTML. Pages refresh automatically when the backend version changes, pages like About have their own style edited in the admin panel, and the animations work down to IE6.
My old creativity — Author, until 2010. Community sites from my early years: a page for the video game Juiced, a remaster of the CelestialHeaven clan site, and a site for Battle Realms, built in HTML, CSS and JavaScript on free hosting platforms.
Frequently asked questions about custom CMS development
Can I update the site myself?
Yes, that is what the admin panel is for. On Bombuilder the links, bio, specs and favorite games are edited in the admin; on Bolimond the layout itself is edited in a visual builder; on Vdan the content is written in a rich-text editor.
Why a custom CMS instead of a ready-made one?
A ready-made CMS fits when your site fits its templates. A custom one makes sense when the design is part of the work, as for an artist; when the content has its own structure, such as projects by type for a construction company; or when you want SEO and analytics built around your content rather than added on top.
How long does a portfolio site take?
It depends on scope: the number of page types, whether you need a visual builder or structured editing, the volume of media to process, the languages, and whether an old site's content has to come along.
Where is the site hosted?
Wherever suits you. These sites are Spring Boot applications with MongoDB or MySQL, so they run on an ordinary server; hosting, the domain and support are agreed at the start.
